Premier League 2
The Premier League's clubs are set for a revolution in reserve and youth team football.

They have been given a set of proposals to try to improve the current set-up, which has come under fire from managers and led to the death of the old-fashioned reserve leagues.

Arsenal 's Arsene Wenger is one of the high-profile bosses to have attacked the current Under-21 league - won last season by Manchester United - while Chelsea now feel forced to send their young players out on loan to foreign or lower-league clubs.

But Mirror Sport can reveal the list of ideas includes:

A FULL reserve league - nicknamed Premier League II - which will mirror the clubs' first team fixtures.

FIVE over-21 players will be allowed in matches, as well as a senior goalkeeper, to encourage youth development.

A TELEVISION contract which will feature live games shown at prime-time, including on Friday nights.

MATCHES will be played in clubs' main stadiums, with reduced ticket prices to encourage fans to attend.

BIG prize money of around £3million for the eventual champions to encourage clubs not to loan out their best up-and-coming players.
It is also understood the academy systems at Premier League clubs will be given an overhaul, with teams set to be under-17s and under-19s rather than the current U16s and U18s.

That is designed to give more youngsters a chance to succeed and prove themselves rather than being shown the door at 18.

It is understood a circular has gone round to the clubs and with discussions underway there is certain to be a major shake-up.

The Premier League has confirmed there are proposals on the table as they try to boost youth development in English football.

It is also a welcome boost for clubs who, from next season, will no longer be able to loan out players midway through the season because world governing body FIFA is scrapping the "emergency loan" system.

The ideas are likely to be voted on in the near future with the suggestion the new-look reserve league could come in for the 2017-18 season.

The old-style Football Combination reserve league is remembered for helping produce young players through the system up until the 1980s, and that could now be on the way back.

Re: Premier League 2
I've been saying for a while that there should be a Premier reserve league with fixtures being the reverse of the first team fixtures. Should be fine with 25 man squads and youth team playing up.

Sounds a good idea. I think you have a good point, exile. Yes, I like that.

"Annual 2 yearly"? How d'you work that out, Boaty?

Good point though - there ought to be a quota of English players, maybe a minimum of 5 on the pitch at any time.

Saw a game on BT recently between Chelsea & City youths and it made me wretch

Africans, Brazilians, Spaniards, Eastern Europeans. Barely an English player to be found on the very stage we are supposed to be spending endless amounts on both financially and in time consumption

Annual 2 yearly discussion about this following another early England exit on its way. Fuck all will actually get done though, it never does

They need to get back to the days of the football combination reserve League.

Great days they were, when I was too young to go away those 2pm kick offs provided decent competitive games with youngsters pushing for first team spots or players coming back off injuries.

Remember Devo comeback game attracted a crowd of around 2000

True Ronald.

Different sports and pitch demands I know, but in the Australian NRL, clubs will quite often have their junior side play at say 12pm, their reserve side play at about 2pm and their top side play at 4pm.

Makes for a really good day if you get the weather.

No reason they couldn't do the same with this, given the fixtures will be identical for both competitions, and, as you say, the pitch technology is so advanced now.

I have been of the opinion for some time now that the reserve fixtures should be played ahead of the first team games. It would make playing in the 'stiff's less of a downer, and provide entertainment for early arrivals at the ground.
This would have been a 'no-no' in the 80s & 90s, but the current pitch 'technology' seems to have made it a viable option.

He'd probably demand a higher price than the LLDC at the OS, what with all his bitching about our deal!

Orient's ground is only just down the road. I'm sure that nice Mr Barry Hearn wouldn't mind us sharing their ground.

Re: Premier League 2
Sounds good but how would they handle promotion and relegation issues? Supposing the 1st team gets relegated but the reserve team does really well - would the reserves also get relegated so that they can continue to mirror the first team fixtures?

Re: Premier League 2
Bit of kick in the knackers for the championship if they get a TV deal and show games on a friday.

Also be interesting to see how they manage to do the fixtures at the OS.
